The RHS Speech and Debate team, founded in 1900, is the oldest academic program at RHS. The team competes in local, state, and national tournaments. We have held the longest consecutive winning streak at the Citrus Belt Speech Region Championships. Our team competes in 6 CBSR league events and 3 CHSSA Qualifying events each year; those that qualify go on to compete at the State Championships each May. Additionally, students may choose to participate in National Qualifying events each spring that may lead them to the National Speech Championships.

Students on the team are all enrolled in the Contest Speech I or II class. They must compete in the CBSR league events and at the State Qualifiers each spring. Members may also choose to compete in additional voluntary tournaments and are also provided opportunities to compete in local competitions for scholarships and prizes. Speech students learn key life skills such as research, writing, listening, critical thinking, and public speaking.
